Teach English in Pingshang Zhen - Anshun Shi
Pronunciation is the color of language. This unit starts off talking about the rise and fall of tone and how to hear it. Techniques for recognizing tone, such as humming a sentence, are very useful. I thought it very interesting that the same words could mean joy or anger or half a dozen other emotions just by the rise and fall of tone or what word is stressed. Later the unit covered the topic of sound joining which is an indication of dialect and also of fluency. Sound joining is not a sign of ignorance, but a natural habit for native speakers. In reflection, I suppose if a language learner does not learn to read, they may never know what the exact words they are saying are or may think a phrase is one word. They could be understood but not fully understand what they are saying. The prom by GB Shaw was very entertaining and quite a brain stretch to read. I can read it because I am a native English speaker with years of spelling and reading practice. I want my students to be able to read even the difficult words by using the dictionary pronunciation helps. I am excited to learn IPA and use it in the classroom.
