This unit went over the different types of testing that you may use in your classroom (and a few that are used to assess language outside of the classroom) and the different reasons they might be important. Placement tests are used to place new students into the correct class based on their ability to speak English. Diagnostic tests are often very similar, and are used by the teacher at the start of the course to see what level the students are at and what they already know to be able to help determine coursework and lesson plans. Progress tests are used periodically throughout the course to let both the teacher and the students know what they have learned and what they need to continue to work on. Practice tests follow the format of external examinations and help the students prepare for them. These external examinations are used to test students English skill, often used for universities and colleges. What tests you use in your classroom are often times determined by the school you are working in, but teachers may also have a say on how often or how they want to test the students progress through the course.
