This unit explores the two productive skills, writing and speaking. We learn about how to favour correct writing and speaking skills in the classroom. For speaking we need to get students interested and involved, to encourage free expression. In order to do this the materials we use should be of interest to the students, we can try to create interest by showing pictures etc and creating a discussion. We learn how to try and overcome problems related with speaking (e.g. students who are shy, afraid of making mistakes etc) by using pair work, group work, and explaining important vocabulary before the main activity. In the writing part of the unit we explore some common problem areas for learners of English, forming of English letters, spelling and punctuation. We also learn that for both speaking and writing it is important to provide a purpose, a need for communication which the students will then want to engage in. From this unit I have learnt in more detail how and why we write and speak, and have acquired some methods and techniques in order to propose effective and interesting writing and speaking activities.
