Unit 11 focuses on teaching receptive skills (reading and listening). Motives for reading and listening may fall into two categories: reading and listening for a purpose, or for entertainment. These two differences may influence how attentively and carefully a person might read or listen to a particular subject. There are five types of skills that are often used for receptive skills: predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming for a general idea, detailed information, and deduction from context. Unit 11 discusses how teachers can effectively promote and develop the use of receptive skills in students. As for possible language difficulty, teachers may want to pre-teach difficult vocabulary and use careful judgement when selecting appropriate reading and listening materials. To encourage participation and promote the use of receptive skills, teachers may want to choose topics of interest to the students, engage and motivate students, and choose effective comprehension tasks. Unit 11 also provides a sample ESA patchwork lesson for teaching receptive skills and some example exercises for students.
