This unit was not as helpful as the previous units to me due to the fact that I attended Teacher's College and thus I am familiar with many of the tips provided in Unit 5. Nonetheless, I think Unit 5 offered a great overview of the teaching style that most young instructors should attempt to emulate. Eye contact, gestures, and the use of your voice are vital to maintaining students' attention and the first steps in establishing a rapport with the class. I also thought it was helpful to read about the different ways that students can be grouped with pros and cons for each. The physical use of the classroom space must also be negotiated and it was interesting to think more closely about how seating arrangements affect learning. The tips on disciplining a class were familiar to me and yet, it is always good to be reminded to separate behaviours from students and to stay calm...no matter what! I think this can sometimes be the most difficult part of teaching and staying professional, adhering to the institution's code of conduct, and maintaining a congenial control are necessary for successful learning to take place.
