In this unit, I learned about materials that are used in the classroom. Course books are typically found in the classroom and provide a tried and true framework to guide the teacher. Materials provided with the course book may include a continuum of leveled texts for classroom use. Workbooks may also be provided with the course book, as well as videos/CDs/DVDs/cassettes, test books, learner dictionaries, and vocabulary flashcards. While all of this is beneficial, these materials do not always fulfill the specific needs of the students. In turn, the teacher may choose to create materials to supplement or replace what is in the course book to fulfill the specific needs of the students. Created materials may include picture stories, role-play cards, supplemental flashcards, gap fill activities, crosswords, and word-search puzzles, all of which can be graded to the level of the students. In addition to course books and created materials, authentic materials, such as newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, and menus may be used to intrigue in motivate students as well as increase their confidence as they understand them.
