Conditionals refer to past, present, or future possibilities. They containing two clauses: an \"if\" clause and a main clause (in no particular order). Ther zero conditional refers to actions and facts that are irrefutable. The first conditional is used when a \"real\" situation in the future is possible or certain, once the condition has been satisfied. Second conditional communicates present or future \"unreal,\" hypothetical situations that are presently not true and will likely never be true. Third conditional refers to hypothetical past actions and hypothetical past results. Mixed conditional refers to a hypothetical past action with a present hypothetical result. Direct speech is actual speech. When direct speech is changed to reported speech, the tense of the reported speech is changed to that of the reporting verb. Pronouns may need to be changed depending on the context. Backshifting occurs when the present becomes the past.
