This unit discussed the receptive skills of reading and listening. There are different ways that we read and listen that are based on our pre-existing knowledge of the world, and whether or not we want to read for a purpose or for entertainment. We use Predictive Skills if we predict what the content is from reading a headline or listening to an introduction. We use Scanning Skills if we want to find specific info, such as reading the newspaper to find what movie will be playing this weekend. Skimming Skills are used to get the general idea of content. We use Detailed Info when we want to understand something fully, such as a textbook for class. Andy lastly, there is Deduction from Content where we need to read to see beyond the literal meaning. I learned some good ways to teach language to maximize the receptive skills, the most important being topic. An interesting topic will motivate students easier and keep them engaged. As teachers, we can pick good topics by getting to know the students and finding out their interests, and by using a variety of topics over time so the intersts of all students is met.
