This unit is about tests, testing and the reasons for administering tests for language students. There are three ways of finding out the skill level of students. These are by tutorials, by evaluations of the students (of their language learning needs, and not anything else), and tests. The tests are differentiated by their purpose. The test could be a placement test, to find out which class the student is most suited to; a progress test, to find out how much the student has retained from the lessons; a diagnostic test, which is a longer version of the placement test, which could be a measure of the skill level reached; and a practice test, for external tests. The latter is used when a student needs to take a test which would provide certification of his/her skill level, for whatever purpose. I think that the many external tests could be difficult to remember, since there seems to be one for every need - for example, those offered by Cambridge University alone are extensive. I think this is good though, because the certification helps the student \"prove\" his/her skill level for institutions that require it.
