In this unit, I learned of different ways of evaluating students' levels and progress, as well as external exams I may need to prepare my students for. Ways to assess students language level include: 1) Tutorials as a whole group or with individual students; 2) Evaluations students do to improve a course; and 3) Tests to see what level a student is or what information they have retained during a course. Tests that may be given to the student are four: 1) The placement test, which is given to the student prior to commencing a course to determine what level the student is; 2) The diagnostic test determines students' strengths and weaknesses--this helps the teacher plan the curriculum for the students; 3) Progress tests, used to gauge what language students have acquired and what has been forgotten; and 4) Practice tests, which are given to prepare students for final internal exams or external exams. External exams may cover general, business, or academic English. General English exams are KET, PET, FCE, CAE, and CPE, and CEL. Business English exams are TOEIC, BEC, and BULATS. Lastly, academic exams are TOEFL and IELTS.
