Teach English in BAde XiAng [→ Duanqiao Zhen] - Anshun Shi
This unit has covered the receptive skills which are reading and listening. It has revealed that there is more to reading than just looking at written text and that there is more to listening than just taking in audio information. Reading involves employing different skills such as predictive, scanning, and skimming skills and reading for detailed information. This means that in each case, one looks at the text for different purposes and/or is selective in how much of it one takes in and how one processes it. This also goes for listening, where one takes in audio information using different skills (in the context of learning language). With reading, learners are able to go at their own pace; with listening, however, a challenge posed is that they may not process the information at the speed of the speaker or audio piece. Therefore, to help with this, the teacher may consider pre-teaching new vocabulary or language points that may be encountered in the audio information. In all, the teacher can help learners develop receptive skills by e.g. choosing interesting topics; exposing learners to as much language as possible.
