Establishment: British colonisation from the 16th to 19th century made english the dominant language by the end of the 19th century. The establishment of the first permanent english-speaking colony in north america in 1607 was a major step towards the globalisation of the language The growing economic and cultural influence of the u.s.since World War 2 helped establish english as the truly global language. Importance: A working knowledge of english has become a requirement in most fields. It is one of the six languages of the United Nations. It is spoken as a native language by around 377 million and as a second language by around 375 million speakers in the world. Speakers of english as a second language will soon outnumber those who speak it as a first language. Around 750 million people are believed to speak english as a foreign language. english has an official or a special status in 75 countries with a total population of over 2 billion. The domination of the english language globally is undeniable. english is the language of diplomacy and international communication. Because english was used to develop communication, technology, programming, software, etc, it dominates the web. 70% of all information stored electronically is in english. Popularity: There are many reasons why english has become so popular. One of them is that english has become the language of business. Another important reason is that popular American culture (like movies, music, corporate chains, etc) has quickly spread throughout the world. It has brought its language with it. While Mandarin chinese is the largest spoken by native language users in the world, english is the largest language spoken by non native language users. Linguistic Imperialism: Linguistic imperialism is a linguistics concept that involves the transfer of a dominant language to other people. The transfer is essentially a demonstration of power- traditionally military power, but also, in the modern world, economic power and aspects of dominant culture are usually transferred along with the language. There are various theories supporting and against the linguistic imperialism of english.
