British english vs American english I?ll write about the difference between the english in America and the english in Britain. People who have ever met an American and a British easily can recognize their difference. I?d like to write some big differences which I guess that many people already know of english between two countries in this paper. People can divide each of their english into some big parts, vocabulary, spelling, common grammar, and pronunciation. First, let?s say the difference between America?s and British?s common vocabulary. For example, while an American uses a scarf for a thing which can be tied around a neck for blocking the wind, a British uses a muffler. An American uses a truck for a big car which can bring many things that are too heavy for people to carry, but a British speaks a lorry. Also an American says a mail for a letter to send to other friends, but a British says a post. We can find that they use different words although their meanings are same. In addition, an American divides three meals into breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In contrast, a British can say dinner for whole meals, and after 8 p.m., he/she says supper for their late meal. That?s why people in Britain sometimes can hear that someone asks to the British ?did you eat dinner?? in lunch time. Second, we can see the difference of their spelling of some specific words. For example, while an American writes C-O-L-O-R for color, a British writes C-O-L-O-U-R. Also, let?s see about the place which we can see a movie. An American writes T-H-E-A-T-E-R, but a British writes T-H-E-A-T-R-E. There are many differences we can find when you look around yourself, and already many people know this difference as many people use these words frequently. Third, their common way of speaking is a little bit different. Let?s say that an American wants to say he/she needs to go. Then he/she normally says, ?I have to go.? However, when a British wants to express that same feeling, he/she usually speaks, ?I?ve got to go.? Those have same meanings. The American also can use this sentence, but not usual. Also there is another example I can say now. A British only adds ?yet? with participle tenses. An American can say ?Did you eat yet??, but a British just says ?Did you eat?? or ?Have you eaten yet?? Fourth, the accent of words is totally different as many people know. Usually people say Americans speak softer than British. A British especially gives an accent on T pronunciation. Also British want to pronounce obviously for all alphabets. That?s why when people whom english is not the first language hear that a sentence which American and British say, they think the sentence is different even though they speak same thing. The accent is really important in pronunciation and making a conversation. Therefore, people who have some interests in the differences of english among countries which use english as the first language can find things easily that there are some specific characters for each country, especially America and Britain. While I searched the differences between those countries, I could enjoy my time.
