Athens has been one of the world’s most important cities for thousands of years and during that time it has had a profound effect on many areas of world culture including art, philosophy and religion. Since becoming the capital city of Greece in 1834, Athens has gradually developed into one of Europe’s great modern cities and its fascinating mix of ancient history and modern vivacity makes it a truly great location to take a tefl/tesol training course.
Athens is particularly well known as the home of the Olympic Games and the return of the event to the city in 2004 has clearly had a huge impact on its continued development. Massive investment in infrastructure has led to improvements in transport systems, hotels and shopping facilities allowing Athens to maintain its reputation as a world class destination. One of the city’s main attractions is the countless numbers of historical sites that draw visitors from all over the world. Cultural wonders such as the Parthenon perched on top of the Acropolis, the Temple of Hephaestus, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the Ancient Agora are just a few of the sites that you will not want to miss.
While Athens is rightly famous for its cultural attractions, the city does have much more to offer its visitors than just temples and monuments. The Plaka area is particularly popular as it has a wide range of shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as the beautiful whitewashed houses and winding streets of Anafiotika. Ermou Street and Aiolou Street are also very popular with shoppers as they contain everything from large chain stores to small boutiques offering all manner of quality goods. If bargain hunting is your passion then you will love the Monastiraki area as it is well known for its array of local markets and small traders where you can practice your bartering skills. Finally, after a long day of sightseeing and shopping you can sample the local greek specialties in one of the city’s many fantastic restaurants.
As well as this impressive array of cultural, culinary and shopping attractions, Athens and the surrounding area also offers Plenty of beautiful beaches where you can relax and unwind. You will find the excellent beaches of Alimos, Varkiza, Glyfada and Vouliagmeni all within easy reach of the city, particularly as the local transport system is both reliable and affordable.
